INTEGRATIVE ONCOLOGY
The care and support of those dealing with cancer is a specialty for Danee Barnett.
Danee Barnett, AP, DOM, received National Certification in “Acupuncture for the Cancer Patient” at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan, including treatment specific to lung, breast, prostate and colorectal cancers. Sloan-Kettering currently includes the integrative therapy of acupuncture for both in-patient and outpatient settings, treating over 1,400 patients per month with acupuncture.
Acupuncture is to effectively reduce side effects of cancer treatment including pain, nausea, vomiting, fear, depression, anxiety, red and white blood count, constipation, diarrhea, and neuropathy. Clinical trials have shown that acupuncture treatment received before and after chemotherapy improves immune function and reduces side effects. Acupuncture has also been proven to enhance the effects of chemotherapy and decrease tumor resistance.
Acupuncture for surgical patients is also used pre and post surgery. Pre-surgery treatment has been proven to promote relaxation, prevent infection and reduce pain. Post-surgery treatment reduces swelling, improves mental alertness, improves intestinal mobility and urination, shortens recovery time and promotes incision healing.
Radiation patients receive acupuncture to help fatigue, anemia, low white blood cell count, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin burns and hair loss.
Danee Barnett is a cancer survivor and has experienced the effects of chemotherapy and radiation. She integrated acupuncture into her own treatment plan and experienced the positive effects first hand over 9 years ago. “It was such and honor to study with the physicians at Sloan-Kettering and see this hospital, which is a world leader in cancer treatment and research integrate the 3000 year old therapy of acupuncture with cutting edge cancer treatment. I am excited to return to Sarasota with these proven protocols” says Barnett.
Included in your complementary therapy are:
Acupuncture: Relieves side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, relieves pain and rebuilds immune system after therapy
Herbs: Chinese herbs will be prescribed only AFTER chemotherapy and radiation is complete. The Sloan-Kettering cancer protocol does not allow for any herbal therapy during treatment, as some Chinese herbs may inhibit the effectiveness of treatment. Specific supplement do’s and don’ts will also be addressed. Sloan-Kettering research shows that some commonly used supplements actually protect and feed the cancer.
Homeopathy: Helps psycho-spiritual and emotional balance - feeling happy is an invaluable part of recovering from cancer
Diet: I will provide diet recommendations that are based on creating an environment within your body that is NOT cancer friendly! This is a very important component of your therapy.
Meditation: You have the power! Your mind has more power than you have ever imagined - I will teach you body-specific guided meditations that will “confront the cancer” - head on! Research shows that cancer patients can expect significant reduction of anxiety and depression, together with much less discomfort and pain. There is reason to expect a 10 percent chance of quite remarkable slowing of the rate of growth of the tumor, and a 50 percent chance of greatly improved quality of life.
Qi Gong: A time-honored exercises method of gathering “Chi” the life force, and directing that self-healing energy to specific parts of your body. I will teach you an exercise that is simple to do and easy to remember.
